About the Test
This thorough health check is designed for men who are considering or currently undergoing testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). For those experiencing symptoms like fatigue, low mood, or reduced muscle mass, understanding if these are due to low testosterone or other health issues is crucial.

In this test, we examine nine Biomarkers.

Why is testing for the following biomarkers important when doing a Testosterone Health Check?

Testing these markers as part of a Testosterone Health Check provides a comprehensive view of hormone levels, overall health, and organ function. Here’s how each test contributes:

1.      Full Blood Count (FBC): This test measures red and white blood cells and platelets, which can highlight general health and any underlying conditions. High testosterone levels can elevate red blood cell counts, which increases the risk of cardiovascular issues including stroke.

 

2.      Liver Function Tests (LFT): The liver plays a role in hormone metabolism, including testosterone. Elevated liver enzymes could indicate liver strain or damage, influencing testosterone levels and overall health.

 

3.      Luteinizing Hormone (LH): LH stimulates testosterone production in the testes. Low levels can indicate issues with the pituitary gland or hypothalamus, while high levels may suggest primary testicular failure.

 

4.     Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH): FSH is important for sperm production and fertility. Abnormal FSH levels can indicate issues with testicular function or overall fertility status.

 

       Total Testosterone: Testosterone is the primary male sex hormone responsible for maintaining libido, erectile function, and spermatogenesis (sperm production). Measuring total testosterone provides an overall sense of the body’s testosterone level, including free and bound testosterone.

 

6.     Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (SHBG): SHBG binds testosterone, oestradiol, and other sex hormones. Too high levels of SHBG can reduce the amount of free testosterone, while low SHBG may lead to an imbalance of free hormones, affecting reproductive function.

 

       Albumin: Albumin also binds testosterone but with a weaker affinity than SHBG. It helps maintain the balance of free and bound testosterone. Abnormal albumin levels can affect hormone distribution and bioavailability, thus impacting fertility.

 

8.     Total PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen): PSA is a protein produced by the prostate, and elevated levels can indicate prostate health issues, including inflammation or cancer. Monitoring PSA is particularly important when evaluating testosterone levels, as testosterone therapy can impact prostate health.

 

9.      Free PSA: Free PSA is a subset of total PSA and is helpful for further assessing prostate health. A higher ratio of free to total PSA can indicate benign conditions, while a lower ratio may indicate a higher risk of prostate cancer.
